St. James Parish Church stands on the oldest parcel of consecrated land on the island, commonly referred to as "God's Acre." The first settlers landed on February 17, 1626 at Holetown not far from the church. The settlement there expanded rapidly. It became necessary to erect a place of worship and in 1628 the settlers constructed a wooden building on this site. This wooden building was replaced by the current coral stone structure which was started in 1680 and completed in 1683, and which is still substantially in use today. The nave roof was raised on new pillars and arches a hundred years ago. Many of the original settlers and many eminent Barbadians were laid to rest in the Church and the churchyard. Indeed, a walk through the churchyard and Church examining the grave stones, vaults and memorial plaques, is like a journey into the history of Barbados. Come
