MINI EDUCATION CENTRE

The Mini Education Centre was officially opened by Mrs. Amor Mottley in 1989.
Father Hatch, who was the rector, then blessed the centre with encouragement from Bishop Drexel Gomez, from the St. James council and from well-wishers, the MEC was off to a good start.

In the beginning there were only students from the St. James Secondary School and from the immediate surroundings, but as the word spread about the work being done, students came from many schools across the island.

Over the years we have helped students from the following primary schools. St. James Composite, St. Albans, Roland Edwards, West Terrace and St. Silas. Students also received help from the following secondary schools: The St. James Secondary, St. Lucy, Coleridge and Parry, Alexandra, the Alma Parris School, Queens College, Harrison College, Combermere, Ellerslie, Springer Memorial, St. Winnifred, St. Leonard Boys, St. Michael and the Lester Vaughn Secondary.

Two students, one from St. James Secondary and one from Combermere went on to the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill Campus and received first class honours. They called to express sincere thanks for the help they received and for the pleasant study environment offered at the MEC.

A few adults also attended the centre for help with their reading skills. One rushed off to live in Canada and the other said she was proud to sit in a bus and open the daily newspaper and to read just like anyone else.

The MEC offers help with home work preparation for the Eleven Plus, CXC and CAPE programmes. This year we were able to set up a computer network station and internet facilities. Secondary school students make use of these facilities. We also introduced the program to the adults of the St. James Parish Church congregation and a few of their friends came along. All of the adults are very keen to become computer literate. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursdays for both adults and school children.

Over the years we have received help from Ms Sandra Seale and a few others. This year help has come from David Trotman of the Servers Guild, who did the network for the computers. Gabrielle Rock graciously volunteered to teach the adults and her father Francis assists. This is a perfect example of cooperation and it is a strong conviction that faith with works can very much make us come alive as we reach out to those in need.

For 17 years now the centre has been functioning. We have received donations of magazines, books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, a television and video, radio, computers, printers, a scanner and furniture from well wishers.

The MEC is one of 4 outreach programmes offered here at St. James Parish Church after the suggestion came from the then Bishop Drexel Gomez, Fr. Hatch encouraged and thanked the volunteers.

Right now we are helping students from Ellerslie, St. Lucy Secondary, Coleridge and Parry, St. James Secondary, Springer memorial, Lester Vaughn, St. James Composite and Luther Thorne.

We welcome any contribution of books, magazines and any other items that children may enjoy and use in their quest for knowledge and truth.

We have this far by faith, we will all need encouragement in order to help our fellow man.
